Dressing Modestly

By Specialk3749

Last month, I received a graduation invitation from another home school family. They are celebrating the graduation of their three oldest children. At the bottom of the invitation to their open house, it stated: "Modest dress, please." I started thinking about what would be appropriate to wear to their home. Our ideas of modest dress are not the same, even though I am big on teaching my children how to dress modestly. This family believes that modest dress means no shorts, girls can wear only dresses, and the dresses are to be below the knee. They are very religiously conservative.

When I was in town a couple of weeks ago I ran into another home school Christian family. The children were dressed in short shorts and low cleavage, spaghetti strap tank tops. I was a little surprised to see them so daintily clad, until their mother stepped out of the car and was dressed in the exact same kind of attire. I am sure that in their opinion they were dressed modestly.

This past weekend was my oldest daughter's 20th birthday. We decided to go to the beach where there is a new water fountain that the kids can play in as well as a new carousel. We had a very good time playing! Of course we were not the only people there, and this brought a great opportunity to observe how modest and immodest people dress. If you have been to a beach lately, you know what I mean when I say that there was a great "lack of clothing"! I did not see anyone there that I knew, but I do know of some Christians who think that we should not be ashamed of our body and that it is okay to join in with this crowd and wear next-to-nothing.

I have taught my children to dress in a modest clothing.  I do not believe that women and girls have to wear dresses only, but I do believe that whatever is worn should be feminine.  For men and boys, the dress should be masculine. My family wears shorts, when the weather is appropriate and we keep them knee length. When going swimming we try to find modest swim wear, that covers as much as possible. This is getting to be a major challenge!

Meaning of Modesty

With such a large diversity of beliefs between people, I began to wonder who is right? If you were to ask either of the two families mentioned above, or even the people at the beach, I am sure they would all think their way of dressing was modest.

According to the Webster's Dictionary, being modest means having moderation, or being somewhere in the middle. Here are the exact definitions:

  1. Having or showing a moderate opinion of one's own value, abilities, achievements; not in vain or boastful.
  2. Not forward: shy or reserved (modest behavior).
  3. Behaving, dressing, speaking, in a way that is considered proper or decent.
  4. Moderate or reasonable; not extreme.
  5. Quiet and humble in appearance, style, etc.

What The Bible Says

The Bible tells us, that as Christians (people who believe in Jesus and are dedicated to living their lives for Him) we are not to cause another person to stumble and fall, or cause them to commit a sin. 1 Corinthians 8:9 "But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak ."

The Bible says that when you look upon another with lust, sexual desires, that you have already committed the sin of adultery. Matthew 5:28 "But, I say unto you, That whosever looketh upon a woman to lust after her committed adultery with her already in his heart."

When Christians wear clothing that reveals the parts of the body like buttocks and breasts, it causes others to look and lust. We can cause someone else to sin. We are to love others and if we really and truly love as we should, we would not want to cause others to sin. Mathew 22:37-39 "And Jesus said unto them, Thou shalt love the Lord Thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself."

So, how are Christians to dress? I believe we have freedom in Christ to dress in appropriate clothing that goes along with the weather, is comfortable, and even fashionable, as long as we do not cause others to sin. When the weather is hot, like it has been here in Michigan this summer, I believe it makes sense to wear clothing that is loose and cool so that you do not overheat. When choosing this type of clothing, I choose shorts that come down to my knee, a t-shirt or loose fitting blouse or even a wide-strapped tank top. My oldest daughter says that a long flowing skirt is just as cool as shorts and that is what she likes to wear.

When you choose clothing, ask yourself the reason why you choose the things you do. Do you choose things because you want to look good for the opposite sex? Do you choose clothing that reveals more flesh, or tight fitting clothing that may not show flesh but is so tight someone can imagine what is underneath the clothing? There are ways of dressing that allow us to be appropriate in the weather but don't cause someone else to look at us with lust. This is modest clothing!

Another question to ask yourself is; "Am I being a light for Christ in my choice of clothing?". When someone sees you at the beach, do they see something different in you or are you looking just like everyone else? To be that light, we have to be different. Some people may not understand it and think we are just weird, strict, old fashioned or conservative, but God uses that to His advantage. When He brings spiritual things to those people's minds for conviction, He will let them remember you and the example you gave. Let that example be a good one and let your light for Christ be a positive one.

How To Teach Your Children Modesty

Teaching our children how to dress modestly can be hard in today's society, but it is well worth the benefit of it when they become teenagers. Start teaching your children by:

  1. Teach then modesty from a young age. Do not dress them in short skimpy stuff as babies, toddlers or preschoolers. Help them choose wise clothing by explaining to them why we do not wear certain types of clothes. Children wonder why they look different than everyone else, and can understand it when we explain it to them. I tell my children that some people do not believe the way we do and then I take them to the Word of God and show them the reason we wear what we wear.
  2. As children get older, let them have freedom of style with boundaries. My children know I do not allow shorts above the knee. They are allowed to choose any color or style they want. This allows them freedom to express themselves. Children like being able to make these type of decisions.
  3. When you see your child making wise choices, praise them for it! Kids love to know that they are pleasing to their parents.
  4. Teach young boys to turn their head when they see something inappropriate.
  5. I think the best thing parents can do to get their children to do the things they want, is to be that example or model for them. If you wear skimpy clothing, you cannot expect anything more from your child or teenager.

What do you consider a minimum for modesty?

  • Tube top or other sleeveless top / mini skirt or short shorts
  • Tank top / mid-thigh shorts or skirt
  • Wide-strapped or sleeved top / shorts or skirt to the knee or longer
  • Sleeved, loose top / mid-calf or longer pants or skirt
  • Dresses only for gals, long pants only for guys

Being a Modest Christian

As Christians we should want to do all things to glorify Christ.  That is our main reason for being here on earth.  Make sure that whatever you do, in your choice of clothing, words that you use, the way you do a job, you do it all to glorify Christ.  Whenever you make a decision ask yourself if Christ will be glorified in it.

A lot to ponder. Good hub. It is a touchy subject, but I think if you profess to be a Christian, you should EARNESTLY and prayerfully seek God on the dress code He wants for you.IF we really want to please God, why taint our testimony to others by wearing thong bathing suits and bikinis so small that off the hanger it looks like the attire of a four year old?!!!

It's getting so bad in some curches until you have to quickly turn away from ladies who lean forward to talk and you can see more than cleavage.

Even in family magazines I've noticed and been disgusted by lotion adds with naked women in what THEY call "tastefully posed nude shots". Family magazine should never have nudity in advertisements!

Why is it mostly women in the magazines that are scantily clad or nude? Christian women should respect themselves enough to dress in a manner that should Christ be standing before them they would not be ashamed.

singlmomat52 - Yes, there are many different degrees of dress. It is the reason I decided to write this hub because Christians are caught up in those degrees. Thank you so much for reading!

bayoulady - I know what you mean about the magazines! Commercials on tv are horrible too. I cringe when I see a Victoria Secret commercial and my boys are in the room. I even had to have my husband close his eyes during one of them.

The reason that it is usually the women who are scantily clad is because men are very visual and Satan knows it. He gets them to "look", then to "think", and then to "act upon it". I tried to get my hub to not sound like I was only talkin to the women, because I believe men and boys should dress modestly too, but I do feel women are the ones who should be very careful.

Thank you for the comment!

You have given good thought to this hub. Funny what comes to my mind is 1 Cor 13:11, "When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me" I think this came to mind because even though I have, pretty much always dressed modestly, I think there was a time that I dressed to draw attention and in growing up in Christ my ideas about how I dressed changed and I put away childish thinking even in this area...Sometimes the attire displays what we are looking for...but I also believe that some people dress in the fashion of the day as a means of acceptance - others want the attention...

You are right that modest clothing can mean many different things to people. While I consider my clothing modest, I do wear tank tops and shorts, far above the knee. I am warm in the summer, here in Michigan and do not have air. I do admit though, that there are fashions that I consider too provocative, some are downright disgusting.

The difference to me is the attitude that I portray as I wear summer clothing. It isn't the tank top that emotes sex. It isn't even my breasts that do. It is my attitude wearing them that will either entice or not.

I remember being a teenager wearing clothes made to attract attention. Being older with a lot more to cover up, my clothing choices have somewhat changed, but my comfort in clothes remains the deciding factor to me. It is within our own hearts and minds that these choices are made.

Great thought provoking hub.

Good hub! I find the same thing among my Christian friends & I think I have the same view on what "level" of modesty is acceptable. Btw, where do you by knee-length shorts?

I mostly shop at Goodwill and other thrift shops, because they tend to have more modest clothing, but this summer I just can't find any longer shorts. And I only have 1 long pair so I've been wearing capris all summer. This is a bit hot since the weather is sometimes reaching 100 degrees here in VA!

I checked out the link in your hub to modest bathing suits, but I found most of them have deep/low scoop or v-necks that revealed cleavage. I have found some high neck suits at Goodwill & a pair of nylon shorts makes it modest in my opinion. What have you found works?

I agree with all these comments and the spirit of your hub. Since our dress is a "gray" issue, it's hard to give hard and fast rules about what to wear in order to be considered righteous. That would be legalism.

That being said, I am a big fan of dressing modestly and being a "safe place" for my friends and family with my attire. I don't want my husband to feel embarrassed when he takes me out in public or others to have to look away or wonder if I'll be wearing something appropriate.

And I have a question for you: What is your take on Barbies?

Joni - The main thing in our choice of clothing is that we do not cause another person to sin with their eyes and that we glorify Christ. I am not here to give "rules" about how long or short your clothes must be, but each individual must evaluate themselves prayerfully and let God convict their hearts or give them peace in what they do. I like what you said about your attitude being part of your dress. Even women who have nice modest clothing can be provocative in the way they carry themselves.

Princessa - Thank you for reading and commenting.

GojiJuice - We find knee length shorts mostly at yard sales. I get real excited when we do find them. I have been looking for a new pair of jean ones, but haven't been able to find any this summer. We also cut off jeans into shorts. For my 4yo, I have found that boy's shorts work well (and you can't tell that they are boys unless you looked real close).

I'm going to recheck that link on the bathing suits. For my 13yo we have found the longer 2 piece suits more modest. You can get them that look like shorts and a tank top, but are two piece ment to show the mid section. We buy it a little larger and then it doesn't show anything. It is also nice because you do not have to get completely naked to use the bathroom.

My older daughter invested in a very nice modest bathing suit. It cost her almost $100, but she got the pattern with it so that she can sew herself another one when she needs it and make one for my other daughters. She considers it a nice investment. She does get a few "looks" when she goes out in it, but she smiles and keeps going. :-)

Habby - I agree with you. Whatever we wear reflects on our husbands. My husband likes for me to look nice, but he would not want anyone else looking at me with lust. :-)

As for Barbies, I am not much of a fan of them. I wasn't a fan of them when I was little either. They always frustrated me because the clothes were hard to put on them. As a parent, I believe Barbies send the wrong message, with dress (there are immodest clothing with Barbies) as well as saying that girls need to be in a career and their bodies the perfect 10. I also think Barbie is full of feminism. That being said, I have never told my girls they could not have a Barbie (and they received a few for birthdays and Christmas from family) but, I have never encouraged it either. So, most of our Barbies went into yard sales and ebay. My girls loved getting the money out of them!

I would assume if an occasion states modest on an invitation that the meaning is clear. Other than that people have many ideas about modesty.

I think some Christian churches are very strict with every dressing up while other find casual, but modest just fine. At the beach you have always seen everything from string bikinis to more conservative bathing suits. As individuals we each have to decide what we are comfortable wearing and for me the older I get the more modest I become. I love attractive clothing but I like to dress with clothing that is appropriate for my age.

Pamela99 - Appropriate clothing for your age is very good! I do not like to see older women wearing clothing to try and make themselves look like they are in their 20's. On the other hand, I do not like it when mother's dress their preschoolers to make them look like they are teens. No matte what the age, modesty is a must!

It was just yesterday, as people were walking into the church lobby, a woman looked as if she just walked off the beach. Maybe she was prepared to go to the beach after church. Wearing what appeared to be a black swim suit, under a low cut white t-shirt dress. I was happy she did not walk into my husband's view.

Church of all places should be a place of modesty. You are right there are so many christians, who dress with the world standards, and see nothing wrong with it. That is maybe, until their spouse or boyfriend's head turns...to some nice looking skimpy dressed woman?

Thank you for a great hum. We are a Pastor's family and homeschooler family. Our beliefs are very conservative, but I do not go as far as the family that only allows dresses (I would have a rebellion on my hands). My daughters (grown now) wear knee length and capris. I don't tell them how to dress and never have. They have learned by example and I have never had a problem with immodest dressing.

We have a very informal church, and although I wear a dress on Sundays, (as Pastor's wife I feel I need to set the example) I often wear slacks on Wednesdays. Most women in our church do not wear dresses, but I notice as they grow spiritually, they often start wearing dresses on Sunday mornings.

I think it is very important that although we are in this world we should not be of this world. There needs to be a difference in the way Christians and non Christians dress, talk, act, entertain, etc.

Thanks again for the great hub

Great topic! I had a tough time finding a swimsuit for my 6 year old - I did not want her in a bikini or a low-cut front, high-cut sides and a big hole in the back. It was hard. It really makes me feel ill when I see what little girls are wearing nowdays. Girls in elementary school want to look sexy. But as you say in your hub the moms dress that way too so they don't know any different.

Children need to be dressed appropriately not only as a way to teach them about modesty but also for their own protection.

It makes them feel more comfortable.

Cari Jean - Isn't it sad that we cannot find swim suits for our little girls? Last year I found one for my 3yo and was excited, but when I went to get it, it was the wrong size and they didn't have another one. I bought it anyway and put a tuck in it to fit. I was glad I did because she can also wear it this year. It looks more like a shirt and shorts than a regular swim suit! I have not seen them like that anywhere else! A friend of mine bought her little girl boy's swim trunks and added a girl t-shirt so that she would be more modest and like a girl. It is a shame that we have to do this.

You are right! I should have added that to my hub. Being unmodest can be dangerous no matter how old!

Great hub with a lot to think about. As a pastor there is much that I need to protect in my church. I think sometimes it's not always ABOUT how we dress, but UNDERSTANDING how we dress.

If women were more educated in the way a man thinks, it would probably change their mind as to how they dress. Isaiah 47:2, 3 mentions the bare thigh together with nakedness. I know not everyone will agree but notice men when they are in the presence of bare thighs (above the knee) and when they are in the presence of someone more modestly dressed.

Also, modesty goes for the man as well. I have seen women be turned away by men with tight or little clothing. The responsibility falls on the man, just as it does a woman for causing the other to sin.

So glad to see this topic highlighted. One day I want to come back and read all of the comments.

There are many facets to the issue of modest dressing. For instance, I have some friends who believe that women should not wear pants. I would never offend them by wearing pants to their home or to an appointment or an outing with them. I know they are true friends because they remain my friend even though they know that if they show up at my house or if we meet somewhere unexpectedly they will probably find me in my jeans.

The most important facet to remember is that the whole counsel of God's Word is our "judge" on all matters, including modesty. Instead of looking at the issue from the perspective of "our rights" or "our liberties" we do well when we look at it all from the perspective of a holy, loving God, who has given us guidelines for our good. He wants us to protect ourselves by the way we dress, wants us to teach our children, boys and girls, to protect themselves by the way they dress. He wants us to enjoy His protection through His guidelines.

And it doesn't stop there. We have that responsibility that you mentioned not to cause others to fall into sinful thinking or behavior. A multi-point hub could be written on this facet alone!

Well, I'll have a hub in the comments section if I don't stop. Thanks again for your willingness to put this topic out there!

I do not agree with you. Tube-tops and short shorts - there is nothing wrong with that at all!! That's perfectly modest... In the summer - wherever you go, tube-tops and skirts, and spaghetti tanks with short shorts! There is nothing wrong with that.

In the spring: Quarter sleeve top, short skirt, light boots. In the winter: sexy sweater, wool short skirt, sexy tights, and high heel and high boots.

In the autumn: button jacket, skinny jeans or skirt, boots or sexy sneakers.

You people have all gone mad!!!!! Who cares about modesty? I don't!! When im with my boyfriend, I wear this:

Hair: Since I'm a beautiful long haired blonde, in my hair I wear a flower in my hair. When it gets colder, a sexy headband.

Scarf: silk scarf, tied sexily around ur neck.

Top: Tube-top, with a light short half-jacket ( buttons are more sexy than zipper ).

Belt: I don't wear one, not sexy enough!

Bottom: short skirt, sexy tights!! B)

Shoes: high heel sexy high boots.

And OMG!! My boyfriend stares!!! B) and go do some 'private'-stuff. ( U know what I mean, B) ).

Sexy stuff in my apartment...if there are 'kids' here, I shoudnt say what we do. OMG! One time some idiotic mom with kids came and yelled at us and said we were a bad example and totally inappropriate just because we were kissing ( I was in his arms ) on a park bench! :)

Hey

I just read this article and I do understand what its trying to say. But this is just my opinion. I believe that dressing modestly is ok there is nothing wrong there. But God is not looking for how good you dress or whatever. He is looking for more of a relationship with people. But the point I'm trying to make is that, yea the bible did say dress modestly, but it's us males that look at a female with lust. But God said we need to have self control and not let these things get in out eyes. Dressing modestly is not going to help males from not sinning. When they go out into the world, they will be exposed to a lot of things. So how do we control that? And it will cause us to sin. But we make it our choice to sin. I believe that a protecting church from all of this is not going to help males when they go out into the world and see half naked bodies. And there is no escape. But we shouldn't worry about sex as much. Because if God said clearly do no do it then we don't. But I believe that people who don't dress modestly should be accepted in any church. God wants their heart too. Slowly they will progress in dressing modestly. But we can't force it on them. Even though girls do dress modestly, guys can still look at girls in a lustful way. And trust me that happened to me before and a lot of guys. And I do struggle with lust but i rely on God to give me the self control. So there is a beauty in females too. So it's mostly the males that need the self control. And we shouldn't pressure females into dressing modestly but we encourage it. I do see people in my church use mini skirts, short pants ect but i choose not to give power to it and we are trained not to give it power. We don't want to hurt girls and put them off God. We want them to learn by themselves. But my opinion came from my experience. So i hope you might get something out of it. Because a lot of people keeps missing this point. So i thought i might share it with you.

Cheers

Dave

Cheers Dave

Hey sorry for my last comment. I was meant to say that Girls who don't dress modestly still should be accepted into churches. And when i said we shouldn't worry about sex so much, i mean that we shouldn't worry about the lustful causes of people who don't dress modestly. Because if we pray to God to protect the church then he will. I believe he will.

Daverajendram - Thank you so much for your comment! You have a good point. I hope I did not give the impression that we as Christians should not except people because of what they wear. Jesus looks at the heart, not the outward. My message in my hub is to the more mature Christians. I know that God is the one who will eventually change the hearts. It is also up to us as parents to train our children in the right way...even when it comes to dress.

Yes, I know that men look at women, no matter what they wear. This will be a problem for them their whole lives. I am teaching my young sons how to turn their head when they see something inappropriate and not dwell on it. In the end, it is the responsiblity of the man to not look. On the other hand, this is no excuse for a women to say she can wear anything she wants. She is not to hinder, but try and help her fellow brothers in Christ.

Thank you so again for your comment. Like I said, I hope I didn't come off too self-righteous.

I think that many of our grandmothers and great-grandmothers would be turning over in their graves to borrow an old expression if they saw the ads on TV, the magazines, newspapers and saw what people are wearing on the streets. From the reference point of just my life going from the Mickey Mouse Club days and Father Knows Best on television to the present...much has changed and not all for the better. I understand your meaning and with or without the religious references, dressing more modestly just makes sense for many reasons.

Peggy W - Yes, I agree. I do believe our grandmothers would be turning over in their graves to see the way people dress, the way they act and the type of shows that are on TV. Thank you for agree with me!

Meghan - Mothers are suppose to be good examples for their children, but I am seeing more and more where they are not. It is not your fault what your mom does, but that does not mean you cannot change your life and make it mean something.

Your grandma was doing something good for you! I am sure that her prayer was that you would live your life for Christ.

I am sorry for your heart break! At your age, you should not be having to worry about those kind of things. Kids nowadays want to be grown up way too fast.

If you want to contact me, I would love to chat with you by email. At the top of the page on the right hand side, there is a link where you can get ahold of me through hubpages.

I think you handled this subject very diplomatically. It's easy to judge someone's standards, and I've been guilty of imposing my convictions on others, without considering their feelings in the process.

We don't tend toward extremes, but short shorts and spaghetti straps are definitely out, and much of my perspective, in this day and age, is that it's for the protection of my kids, as well, that they wear appropriate attire.

sagebrush_mama - You are right, it is for the protection of our children that we make sure they wear appropriate clothing! I wish I had brought that point out more in my hub. Thank you for the comment!

I'm 14 and I think that being modest means wearing shirts with sleeves and shorts or skirts that are knee length or longer. I have found that when I wear something that pushes the line it makes me uncomfortable because I'm always tugging at my clothes to keep it modest, and if i try on a skirt or shirt that is too short or tight, I feel uncomfortable, and my self confidence plummets while I'm wearing it even if it's only for a few seconds in the dressing room. The other thing is that I like to be active, and I have a brother, so I'm always playing with him on the ground, getting my arms pinned to the ground, and if I'm wearing something too short, and it comes up, i can't pull it down, but if I'm wearing a longer shirt, and it comes up a little, I don't have to worry about it, and i can just focus on having fun.

Dear alie williams - You are a smart 14 year old! There are not a lot of 14 year olds who are willing to "go against the grain" and be different. Thank you so much for commenting. I like hearing from the younger generation!
